Configuring a License Server Manually

When you use License Wizard to install the license server, it is configured automatically. Hence, configuring your license server manually is only required in specific cases, for example:

  • If you installed the license server via a terminal on macOS or GNU/Linux.
  • If you want the license service to use specific ports, so that you can add exceptions for these ports in the firewall of your license server.
  • If you need to change the hostname of your server or adjust the one that was added by License Wizard.
  1. Open a Command Prompt with administrator privileges.

  1. In the command prompt, enter the following command to edit license.dat:

    > mkdir C:\flexlm

    > copy con C:\flexlm\license.dat

  1. Enter the following text:

    • If you want your license server to use any available port:

      SERVER <server name> 0 ANY VENDOR toonboom USE_SERVER

      Replace <server name>with the hostname of the server.

    • If you want your license server to use specific ports:

      SERVER <server name> 0 <license server port> VENDOR toonboom PORT=<vendor daemon port> USE_SERVER

      Replace <server name> with the hostname of the server, <license server port> with the port that you want the license server to use, and <vendor daemon port> with the port that you want the vendor daemon to use.

    2. TIP You can also specify this_host as the server name to let the license server use the machine's hostname.
  1. Press Ctrl + Z to close the text input and save the file.

  2. If the license service is already running, restart it to make it take the new configuration in account:

    > NET stop ToonBoomLicense

    > NET start ToonBoomLicense

  1. Open a Terminal.

  2. In the terminal, enter the following commands to create and edit license.dat:

    $ sudo mkdir -p /usr/local/flexlm/licenses

    $ sudo vi /usr/local/flexlm/licenses/license.dat

  1. Press the i key to enter insert mode and start editing the file.
  1. Enter the following text:

    • If you want your license server to use any available port:

      SERVER <server name> 0 ANY VENDOR toonboom USE_SERVER

      Replace <server name>with the hostname of the server.

    • If you want your license server to use specific ports:

      SERVER <server name> 0 <license server port> VENDOR toonboom PORT=<vendor daemon port> USE_SERVER

      Replace <server name> with the hostname of the server, <license server port> with the port that you want the license server to use, and <vendor daemon port> with the port that you want the vendor daemon to use.

    2. TIP You can also specify this_host as the server name to let the license server use the machine's hostname.
  1. Press Esc to exit insert mode.
  2. Type in :wq and press Enter to save and quit.

  1. If the license server daemon is already running, restart it to make it take the new configuration in account:

    $ sudo launchctl unload /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.toonboom.LicenseServer.plist

    $ sudo launchctl load /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.toonboom.LicenseServer.plist

  1. Open a Terminal.

  2. Enter the following command to edit license.dat:

    $ sudo vi /usr/local/flexlm/licenses/license.dat

  1. Press the i key to enter insert mode and start editing the file.
  1. Enter the following text:

    • If you want your license server to use any available port:

      SERVER <server name> 0 ANY VENDOR toonboom USE_SERVER
