Pencil Retouch Properties

The properties of the Pencil Retouch tool are located in the Tool Properties view. From this view, you can select whether you want to affect the thickness or opacity of your pencil strokes. You will then select how you want to affect the thickness or opacity by selecting one of the Pencil Retouch modes.

TIP You can alternate between Adjust Thickness and Adjust Opacity with the up and down arrow keys.

For more information on the Pencil Retouch mode, see Pencil Retouch Modes.

The sliders in the Pencil Retouch properties will allow you to adjust the retouch radius, control points smoothing and how much the stroke will be affected based on the maximum and minimum pen pressure applied.

The retouch radius slider controls the size of the region that will be affected by the Pencil Retouch tool. This region will either detect when coming into contact with a centerline of a pencil stroke or apply changes to the centerline of strokes that fit within the boundary of the retouch radius. How the retouch radius will affect your pencil line will depend on which stroke alignment modes you have selected in the Pencil Retouch properties.

For more information about stroke alignment modes, see Stroke Alignment Modes.

Adjust Thickness

The Adjust Thickness tool property will enable you to expand or reduce the thickness of your pencil stroke based on the pen pressure applied.

The Maximum Thickness and Minimum Thickness values will allow you to dictate the amount that the line thickness will be affected based on the pen pressure applied. The maximum value represents the maximum width possible when full pressure is applied. The minimum value represents a percentage of the maximum thickness when applying the least amount of pen pressure.

For example: If the Maximum Thickness value is set to 50 and a Minimum Thickness value is set to 20%; When full pressure is applied, the line thickness will enlarge by 50 px and the minimum pressure would increase only by 10 px as 10 is 20% of 50.

NOTE This example is using the Increase mode. The same logic will apply respective to the Pencil Retouch mode selected.

When adjusting the thickness of the line, the Pencil Retouch tool will be following the centerline of the stroke. The expansion or reduction of the thickness of your line will be distributed evenly on either side of the centerline. When retouching, you need to ensure that the centerline of your stroke is within the Retouch Radius. If the Retouch Radius does not make contact with the centerline, nothing will happen.

IMPORTANT If you use the Pencil Retouch tool over the edge of your stroke, the Pencil Retouch tool will not affect it. The stroke will only be affected if the Pencil Retouch tool is applied to the centerline.

The Thickness Control Points Smoothing slider affects the amount of control points created along the pencil stroke. A lower value will apply more control points to the stroke which will apply more detail and create harsher thickness curves overall. A higher value will apply less control points making the stroke appear to widen or thin more gradually

Adjust Opacity

The Adjust Opacity tool property will enable you to increase or decrease the transparency of your pencil stroke based on the pen pressure applied.

The Maximum Opacity and Minimum Opacity values will allow you to dictate how opaque your stroke will be based on the amount of pen pressure applied. The maximum value represents the maximum opacity possible when full pressure is applied. The minimum value represents a percentage of the maximum opacity when applying the least amount of pen pressure.

For example: If the Maximum Opacity value is set to 50 and a Minimum Opacity value is set to 20%; When full pressure is applied, the opacity will increase by 50 px and the minimum pressure would decrease only by 10 px as 10 is 20% of 50.

NOTE This example is using the Increase mode. The same logic will apply respective to the Pencil Retouch mode selected.

When adjusting the opacity of the line, the Pencil Retouch tool will be following the centerline of the stroke. The transparency applied to your line will be distributed evenly on either side of the centerline.

The Opacity Control Points Smoothing slider affects the amount of control points created along the pencil stroke. A lower value will apply more control points to the stroke which will apply more detail and create harsher opacity curves overall. A higher value will apply less control points making the stroke appear to increase or reduce the opacity more gradually
