Setting Up the Environment Variable on Mac OS X
Follow these steps to set up the environment variable on Mac OS X.
1. | Using Terminal, open the folder Mac OS X. This is a hidden folder, so you need to open it using the line: cd; open .MacOSX |
2. | If the folder does not exist, create it by typing the following: |
mkdir .MacOSX
3. | Navigate to the Mac OS X folder and create the environment.plist file. You can use the following lines: |
cd .MacOSX/touch environment.plist
sudo vim environment.plist
4. | Type in your password to edit the file. |
From inside the text editor, type "i"
to go to Insert Mode.
5. | Copy or type the following text into the environment.plist file: |

<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">

6. | When you have finished copying the text into the plist file, type Esc :wq to save and quit the vi text editor. |
